Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (I) [80-62-6] with the binary initiator system cobaltocene  [1277-43-6]bis(Et acetoacetato)copper(II) [14284-06-1] was studied kinetically at 25° in acetonitrile. The relationship between yield and mol. weight of the resulting I polymer was suggestive of a living polymerization character in this system. The synthesis of block copolymers [25034-86-0] of I with styrene (II) was attempted by adding II as the second monomer to the polymerization system of I. The block copolymer was formed in a yield of 20% where I was polymerized for 1 day, while the yield went up to 80% when the I polymerization was carried out for 3 days. The resulting block copolymer was characterized by IR spectroscopy and gel-permeation chromatog.
