Mun, Yang Un published the artcileMetal-containing initiator systems. XXXII. Polymerization of vinyl monomers initiated by the binary system of bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt(II) and sodium tetraphenylborate, Computed Properties of 14284-06-1, the publication is Memoirs of the Faculty of Engineering, Osaka City University (1983), 149-59, database is CAplus.

NaBPh4 (I) [143-66-8] accelerated the polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of transition-metal chelates, especially bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt (II) [14024-48-7]. A rate equation for the polymerization of Me methacrylate (III) [80-62-6] with the III catalyst system was formulated and an overall activation energy of 9.6 kcal/mol determined The presence of I accelerated the polymerization of III in the presence of Co2+, Cu2+, and Co3+ chelates but had little no effect with Mn2+, Mn3+, TiO2+, and Ni2+ chelates. Co2+ salts showed lower polymerization activity than the II complex, while H2O 18-crown-6  [17455-13-9], and p-benzoquinone  [106-51-4] inhibited the polymerization process. The rate of polymerization of III using the III catalyst system was 2nd order with respect to III and proportional to the square roots of the concentrations of both initiators. An initiation mechanism for this system was suggested based on spin-trapping techniques.
